TITL: The Message of God Confronts Error

TEXT: Galatians 2:11-14

INTRO

What if your significant other made you a beautiful meal but halfway through said that they accidentally dropped poison in it. No big deal, right?
Paul is going to show how dangerous error is in the life of Christians is not handled properly.

1. Error Left Unconfronted Can Lead Others to Stray vs. 11-13

“Religious hypocrisy is the worst kind of hypocrisy; it’s the most damaging because it’s the least expected and the hardest to get over.” Todd Wilson (Preaching the Word Commentary)
“The Christian church cannot be what it is called to be when ritual, race, class, or other distinctions separate members from each other.” John MacArthur
“We can think of hypocrisy as a virus. It needs human interaction to survive; indeed it spreads and thrives on contact. And when it finds the right environment, hypocrisy can go viral and infect a whole community. This is what happened in Antioch.” Todd Wilson
“Faithfulness involves more than believing the right doctrine. Right doctrine without right behavior always produces hypocrisy.” John MacArthur
Galatians 6:1–2 “Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.”

2. The Gospel Calls All to Freedom v. 14

“The problem with Cephas’s [Peter’s] withdrawal from table fellowship with non-Jews was what it communicated about the nature of the gospel. It implied that in addition to what God accomplished for sinful humanity through the atoning death of Christ, people had to contribute something to their own redemption before reconciliation with God was complete and fellowship with other, fully justified Christians was possible.” ESV, Commentary on Galatians
Galatians 3:26, 28 “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”

CONCL

It is hard confronting people. It’s uncomfortable and if not done well can lead to problems. But let’s be clear if error is left alone it can be damaging to more than just one person.
As we walk this path, let’s make sure we do so humbly and conscious of the gospel’s message.
Be in prayer as you go into the endeavor and seek the Lord’s wisdom as you do so.

Keys to remember:

Paul knew Peter (and Barnabas).
Paul addressed the error of the moment.
Paul redirected Peter to the Gospel message.

1. Have you ever seen someone accept something that seemed crazy and saw
it change their life radically? (e.g. maybe a diet, a skill that someone
taught them, etc.) Describe what occurred.

2. What harm could occur if we just left people to think or do whatever
they wanted, especially if we knew it to be dangerous for them morally,
emotionally, or physically?

3. How do you fight against hypocrisy in your own life?

TITL: The Message of God Reveals Truth

TEXT: Galatians 2:1-10

INTRO

Many of us love good mysteries. The way the story unfolds and clues are put together. Because when we feel the truth is concealed, we feel we are missing something critical. That is probably why Christmas and birthdays are a kid’s favorite time of year.
The good news is that God does not conceal the truth from us and invites us to know it and Him better.

1. Truth Does NOT Bring SLAVERY vs. 1-5

What the truth does…
- a. Truth brings ACCOUNTABILITY vs 2-3
- b. Truth confronts ERROR vs 4-5
The gospel is about grace, not merit.
Also… The MacArthur New Testament Commentary… “Christian freedom is not license. When we become free in Christ we lose our freedom to sin, of which we were once a slave. In Christ, “having been freed from sin, [we] become slaves of righteousness” (Rom. 6:18)”

2. Truth Is FAITHFUL and UNCOMPROMISING to the Calling of the Gospel vs 6-10

a. Our SOCIAL status should not influence our calling vs 6
- Paul respected the other apostles, but did elevate titles or place them above Christ
- Acts 15:1-29
b. The LOCAL church matters in ministry vs 9-10
- we are a work in progress…. and we need to work to demonstrate grace
- we must be holistic in our approach to ministry… practical needs, but NEVER neglecting the gospel

CONCL

Paul tells us that the gospel is for all people….
- Careful not to impose cultural standards, only the standards of God’s Word
- not try adding “conditions” to how a person should live in Christ. God’s Word is clear how we are to live before Him.
All are welcome, and to come as you are but we cannot remain as we are. We must continue to grow in the work of Christ becoming more like Him each day.
What are you doing to grow in that manner? What plans do you have in place for accountability to the truth of God’s Word. No man is an island in their walk with Christ.
This week reflect on God’s transforming power and praise Him for it. Then pray how God can use your story to tell others about Him.

TITL: The Message of God is Transformative

TEXT: Galatians 1:11-24

INTRO

The Galatians were facing a faith crisis. They were tempted to follow a false teaching that would lead them to legalism under a Jewish tradition that would bring no life change or hope…
What does Paul do? Does he make a theological argument?… No, at least to start, he shares his testimony of life change. He brings them back to the transformative power of the gospel.

1. The Message of God CONFRONTS Our Former Life — vs. 11-14

Paul is condemning the tradition of the false teachers (judaizers), NOT Bible teaching, church gatherings, or Pastors

2. The Message of God QUALIFIES Us as Messengers — vs. 15-17

if you have been saved by the gospel, you can share the gospel
When the gospel changes you, it qualifies you for service
part of following Jesus is helping others follow jesus

3. The Message of God POINTS People to Christ –vs. 18-24

CONCL

What makes me qualified to share the truth of God with others?… The answer is the gospel. We do not come arrogantly to others, but humbly as one beggar to another.
Sometimes we get so fixed on ourselves that we forget the power of our testimony is that God’s power worked in you for a new life and brought life change.
This week reflect on God’s transforming power and praise Him for it. Then PRAY how God can use your story to tell others about Him.

1. What has been something that you can point people to, specifically of life change, that has occurred in your life because of the gospel’s work?

TITL: The Message of God Is Clear

TEXT: Galatians 1:1-10

INTRO

Have you ever played the telephone game… It seems so easy to get a message confused in those games.
Background …
- Author/Audience: Paul’s letter to the Galatians was addressed to a group of churches in Galatia, a region of present-day Turkey.
- Paul wrote to counter those who taught that Christians must follow Jewish Law to be accepted by God.
- One central passage that carries the purpose of the book is “a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ” (2:16).

1 We can know the Originator of the Gospel vs. 1-5, 10

How do we know the originator of the message?
a. It comes from Christ Himself v. 1
b. It Points to Christ Alone vs. 3-5, 10
Apart from the gospel, we have no salvation, no fellowship w/ God, no hope!

2 Sharing the True Gospel vs. 6-9

1 Timothy 1:3 “As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain at Ephesus so that you may charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine,”
What we are to share?:
- a. The True Gospel is not Secretive vs. 6-7 Acts 15:24–25 “Since we have heard that some persons have gone out from us and troubled you with words, unsettling your minds, although we gave them no instructions, it has seemed good to us, having come to one accord, to choose men and send them to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,”
- what causes apostasy?
  - some personal crisis, hardship, or loss (a moment of weakness or a root of bitterness)
  - twisted truth
- b. The True Gospel is to be Accurate vs. 8-9
how do we fight apostasy?
- hold tenaciously to the TRUTH
- SCRIPTURE must be our final authority
- here biblical WARNINGS

CONCL

We are in need of making sure we understand the value of the gospel….
- a. Set aside time each day to spend with Jesus to know Him
- b. Talk to Jesus each day about what is going on in your life
- c. Ask Jesus to show you people to share the Gospel
